John Becker is brilliant doctor, who runs a small practice in Bronx and has just one flaw - he hates people. Not all of them, just those stupid, ignorant, those wasting his time, those taking his parking space, those who do not agree with him... Well, the list is long.

Doctor John Becker graduated from Harvard at the top of his class, later moved on to research job, but everything changed when his wife suddenly left him. The divorce changed his whole life - he resigned from his job and opened small practice in Bronx, where he uses his skills and experience to help local people, including those that can’t actually pay him. But there’s just one thing about John that stops him from being most popular human being in the neighbourhood - he can’t stand people, including his own patients.

He has two employees, nurse Margaret, who learned how to deal with his quirks and witless Linda, who... is around. If he is not getting annoyed by his patients you can find him in a diner owned by attractive Reggie and where his best friend (or rather only friend), blind Jake, runs a newspaper stand. And that’s the whole world of John Becker.

Up to a point it was one of the best tv comedy series in United States - well written, with well picked cast and great atmosphere. Even though the whole show took place basically in three places (Becker’s practice, Reggie’s dinner and Becker’s apartment) the variety of topics and funny dialogues kept the series on very high level. In small way Becker was similar in style to British productions - main characters are a little bit bitter and down-to-earth with their failing lives and personal problems. The cynical humour and great chemistry between the characters have created a great series.

Unfortunately after season 4 creators decided to drop the character of Reggie (played by Terry Farrell) and replace her with Chris (played by Nancy Travis), which ended up really badly. For few episodes the season 5 was a mess and later Chris became simple substitution for Reggie, but the chemistry between characters was already gone. There was season 6, in which character of Bob (played by Saverio Guerra) have disappeared and was replaced by new character played by Jorge Garcia (later one of stars of Lost), but those changes and shifting the main story to relationship between Becker and Chris ended up in disaster and the whole show was cancelled after 12 episodes.
