Mike Flaherty is the Deputy Mayor of New York which isn’t as simple job as it may seem, especially when you have boss like Mayor Randall M. Winston, who commits one blunder after another.
There were few good atempts to show how the politics are being done and strangely enough most of them were both funny and realistic. Spin City is one of those comedies that not only show the background of politics (on local level), but also creates entertaining atmosphere thanks to well developed strong characters (f.e. Mike Flaherty, Paul Lassiter, Stuart Bondek).
Unfortunately creators made few small mistakes during production that dragged the series down which were the notorious returns of Mike’s personal matters which actually were mostly unwatchable (poorly written small talks between Mike and his girlfriend or date). But when they decided to drop the idea to keep him in relationship everything began to run smoothly.
The other flop was to keep the series running after Michael J. Fox decided that his Parkinson’s disease makes it impossible to be still be involved in production. Creators tried to find replacement for him (Heather Locklear, Lana Parrilla, Charlie Sheen), but it only seemed to make it worse.
To summarize - after dropping the character of Mike’s girlfriend very good show that lasted too long.
