The staff of Dawson’s Dairies delivers the milk to the suburban part of London, but milk is hardly their most important topic during conversations in canteen.

British comedies about co-workers are usually one of the best - they give a lot of opportunities to introduce outside characters (like clients, other co-workers, their families and friends), so it is easy to keep it fresh for long time. Bottle Boys had the similar potential - milkmen deliver the products right to the door of the clients, so there might have been lots of funny situations, although their clients are usually still asleep when the milk arrives. Unfortunately creator Vince Powell went into different direction and concentrated on the staff and the interactions between them when they finish their rounds and spend some time in the canteen (quite similar to American sitcom Taxi). But at that point the problems began.

First of all the characters created for Bottle Boys were rather simple and one-dimensional, the scripts (some of them already used by Powell in his previous sitcoms) were patched together without making much sense together, the characters often changed between episodes (in some Dave Deacon is a slacker, in other he is the best in the depot, sometimes he is street-smart one, sometimes the idiot), so each episode had completely different chemistry and some of them simply lacked chemistry.

What is more the choice of showing the milkmen was rather curious - since most of the topics were about things outside the work it made no difference if they were milkmen, taxi drivers, cooks or policemen. Another problem was the cast - Robin Askwith did well, but veteran Richard Davies pretty much stole the show and his scenes with his inept secretary were the best in the episodes. Rest of the characters were too bland to support Askwith and overall Bottle Boys ended up as rather forgettable sitcom.

Sometimes called worst British sitcom ever Bottle Boys had its problems, but to be honest wasn’t as bad as that - the episodes were chaotic, the chemistry was missing, but there were few good episodes.
