Alas Smith and Jones

1980s British tv comedy series

Sketch-based series of pair of comedians, Mel Smith and Griff Rhys Jones, that teamed up after Not the Nine O’Clock News and kept working together for next over 20 years.

Sketch-based series created by Mel Smith and Griff Rhys Jones are in many ways similiar to what the two were doing on Not the Nine O’Clock News, but Alas Smith and Jones somehow was missing the lightness and the momentum that was created f.e. by Rowan Atkinson. To put it another words Mel Smith and Griff Rhys Jones weren’t enough to make it competitive to the predecessor. Also they were trying (also in Not the Nine O’Clock News) to mock other comedians (like Two Ronnies, Benny Hill) which was rather arrogant since they were mocking shows that were far better than their own.

Summary: if you have enjoyed Not the Nine O’Clock News you will most probably enjoy this one, just don’t expect the same level. Some of the characters were good, but also some of the sketches hit the rock bottom.
