Life in the 1920s wasn’t in any way simplier than ours - take a look at th Lord Meldrum household, his family and his staff. In this house every day is full of surprises.
Unusual series in many ways - similar to other Perry and Croft works (f.e. ’Allo ’Allo), there is a continuity between episodes, the length of the episodes (50 minutes per episode, not 30) and also the times shown (1920s).
We see the small problems, affairs and relationships between people in the household, the Meldrum family and their servants (cook, cleaner, butlers) with people that visit the house. The slow pace of the series, the length of the episodes, the outlook of drama rather than comedy - all that can fool viewers, because the very good scripts and great cast made it work perfectly.
There are some jokes and catchphrases running during the series (which is also typical for Perry and Croft duo), the characters are well developed, chemistry is great (which is hardly suprising since almost exactly same set of actors was used previously in Hi-De-Hi sitcom). Despite the rather slow tempo the series is really entertaining and often it is hard to notice that the episodes are longer than usual in comedy series.
