Due to some extraordinary coincidences Jim Hacker finds himself in position to become a new Prime Minister and moves up from ministry to diplomacy.

With a little help from Sir Humphrey Hacker runs his government, but begins to feel threatened from the opposition from within the party.

Man Overboard

Sir Humphrey fights the Employment Secretary’s plan to relocate most of the military personnel away from London. He decides to make use of the Prime Minister paranoia.

Official Secrets

Hacker’s attempt to suppress an unflattering chapter of his predecessor’s memoirs, but that fact is leaked to the press and puts him in the hot spot for media.

A Diplomatic Incident

The death of Hacker’s predecessor provides a chance for some international negotiations to take place. For Hacker the most important part is closure of negotiations with French over the Channel Tunnel, but French prove to have something up their sleeve.

A Conflict of Interest

When City scandal breaks up Hacker is desperate to smooth the things and one of his options is to appoint Sir Desmond Glazebrook as Bank of England Governor. But is he really that desperate?

Power to the People

Prime Minister is put in awkward position when local official Agnes Moorehouse proves that he has no power over local goverment. He tries to win that battle by reforming the whole concept of local government. Strangely enough Agnes Moorehouse and Sir Humphrey agree it will be a disaster.

The Patron of the Arts

Hacker’s invitation to the British Theatre Awards dinner becomes a hot potato when the size of the Arts Council grant is revealed. Of course Sir Humphrey, who is linked with the Arts Council, doesn’t want to make it any easier for him.

The National Education Service

When the Department of Education and Science stands in the way of his reform, Hacker take the advice to abolish it. Sir Humphrey and Sir Arnold agree that it is good idea, but it can never take place.

The Tangled Web

When Hacker unwittingly lies to the House of Commons about bugging the MPs and it seems that Prime Minister is in deep trouble. The BBC interview with Sir Humphrey becomes very handy in the situation.
