After divorce Alan is forced to move to beach house of his irresponsible brother Charlie. But together with him his teenage son moves in, which changes lives of both of them.
The series began as fast-paced sitcom with a lot of single-liners, but after a little while it began to be the worst thing about it. Actually even the title should be changed to ’Charlie Sheen and some actors in the background’, because he gets pretty much all the punch lines in the show - this is the worst case of sitcom character domination since ALF. Yes, at the beginning it was fun to watch, but with time the jokes seems to be more and more predictible... Well, if you know that Charlie Sheen will have the last word in every dialogue...
The characters were well developed, but they didn’t have much chance to glow in scenes where Charlie Sheen was present (which is... almost every scene). Also the series are lacking the freshness - it is a very, very, very typical American sitcom and after viewing about dozen of episodes it is easy to predict the plot or even the jokes. The characters doesn’t seem to gain anything with time (Charlie is irresponsible womanizer, Alan is uptight, Jake is bored).
It was good project which went stale after just a handful of episodes (just like Everybody Loves Raymond). Perhaps if they would find a better way to present additional characters it would keep the good level. Instead they have introduced cameos of well known, but not particularly helpful people, like Denise Richards, Jenna Elfman, Jenny McCarthy, Courtney Thorne-Smith, Stacy Keach, Robert Wagner, Sean Penn, Elvis Costello, Harry Dean Stanton or Heather Locklear. To be honest I can’t recall any other sitcom that would try so hard to be something just by putting familiar faces.
