Father and son run together "rag and bone" business (buying and selling old junk) and they don’t really get along - father is grumpy and doesn’t want to change anything, while his son wants something better from life.

| The vicar asks Harold to write an an article on "rag and bone" men for the church magazine’s centenary edition. Albert wants to have some influence on the article, but his son in convinced it will be better if he will write it himself. |
2 | A Star Is Born |
| Harold has joined an amateur dramatics group, who use the Steptoe house as a rehearsal room for their play. Albert doesn’t want to have anything to do with the whole idea until he is offered a part himself. |
3 | Oh, What a Beautiful Mourning |
| When Albert’s brother George dies it’s a surprise to Harold who never knew he existed. The greedy relatives turn up for the funeral, all hoping to be left something. |
4 | Live Now, P.A.Y.E. Later |
| When a tax inspector calls to investigate Albert’s claim for an allowance for his - long dead - wife Harold has to think fast to save his father from going to prison. |
5 | Loathe Story |
| After being beaten at badminton by his father, who announces his desire to join the local tennis club, Harold tries to kill him whilst sleep-walking, so he goes to a psychiatrist to get to the bottom of it. |
6 | Divided We Stand |
| Harold wants to redecorate the house, but can’t convince his father to make any change, so he sees the only solution - divide the house between them and live separately. |
7 | The Desperate Hours |
| It’s a cold winter day and the Steptoes are reduced to putting pfennigs in the meter. But the day becomes more interesting when they are visited by two escaped convicts. |
8 | The Party |
| Albert is looking forward to another family Christmas, but Harold wants to go to Majorca. When his plans are ruined he decides to have a party at home. |
