Father and son run together "rag and bone" business (buying and selling old junk) and they don’t really get along - father is grumpy and doesn’t want to change anything, while his son wants something better from life.

| Pilot episode. Harold Steptoe is 37 and since leaving the army he was helping his father Albert running the "rag and bone" business. When Harold gets another job offer he is determined to take it, but his father can’t imagine to be on his own and is equally determined to stop Harold from leaving. |

| Harold is dating a woman called Roxanne, and Albert is affraid he will leave home soon, so he creates he makes an arrangement to break up those two. |
3 | The Piano |
| Harold has the offer of a piano, which its owner is selling cheap. Unfortunately it’s in a top floor flat and Harold has to get Albert to help move it downstairs. |
4 | The Economist |
| On a hunch Harold buys a huge amount of sets of dentures hoping to make a fortune on them. |
5 | The Diploma |
| Tired of being just a "rag and bone" man Harold decides to make a diploma in different profession - he chooses to be a television repairman. |
6 | The Holiday |
| Albert wants to go, as usual, to Bognor Regis on holiday, but Harold has completely different plans - he wants to go on a skiing holiday abroad. |
