Jess shares a flat with 3 friends... male friends to be exact, which leads to some awkward situations and unusual friendships.
New Girl features singer and actress Zooey Deschanel (who is also producer of the series) as Jess, the girl that shares a flat with 3 men. Although the premise opened many potential ways to build quite interesting and funny moments, the way the creators chose seems to be one of the worst. On one hand we have sometimes entertaining plots and unusual situations, but on the other we have rather unimpressive acting (especially from Jake Johnson and Zooey Deschanel) and often the comedy is turned into comedy-drama or just not that interesting drama plots.
Originally it might have been a good idea, that with time the series turned into kind of a messy not-really-sitcom and not-really-drama production. Just like in case of Community in New Girl we have often episodes in which the writers or the actors simply tried too hard to be wacky, cool and intellectual at the same time and it just blew in their faces. Some of the plots are simply bad, like the overused will they / won’t they situations between Jess and Nick or Cece and Schmidt.
Overall not very impressive comedy series - it had the potential, but there is always something missing - acting skills, good writing or sometimes both. It’s hard to point out any strong points of the productions, perhaps the characters that are likeable, although their personalities are quite similar to each other.
