Colonel Hogan leads the prisoners in German camp during the II World War and do everything he can to spoil plans of German war machine. And he can do, surprisingly, a lot.
Hogan’s Heroes is one of those comedy series that have large number of fans and equally large number of people that can’t stand it. The creators have chosen a difficult storyline to make fun of - prisoners of war camp in Germany which was controversial for some people. They’ve filled the camp with incompetent guards, all German soldiers are rather stupid, and on the other hand the clever prisoners that constantly outsmart them.
Leaving the controversy aside, Hogan’s Heroes is hard to describe in just few words - it can appeal to some people with it’s relaxed atmosphere, but there were better sitcoms in 1960s. To begin with the plots are completely unreal, characters are completetly unreal and the whole production was rather cheap (all the windows are frosted so viewers can’t see that there is nothing behind them). The laughtrack (which was the curse of 1960s US series) shows where the creators saw the jokes, but often it’s hard to spot them. Of course it’s been created 50 years ago and times have changed, but Hogan’s Heroes had really limited potential and the situations were repeated over and over again.
