John and Kayleigh work for a supermarket in Manchester and every day they travel to and from their work in John’s car.
John and Kayleigh work for a supermarket in Manchester, he is an assistant manager, and she is a promotion rep. Every day, they travel to and from their workplace in John’s car as part of the car-sharing scheme. While listening to their favourite music on Forever FM, they share stories of what they have done during the day or after work. While car-sharing can be boring, those two seem to have found a perfect way to fill the time and from time to time they take a detour from their usual routes and visit other places together.
On the surface, this show should not work - basically just two characters, same setting each time, same routines, work-related discussions or just every day trivia. But somehow it does, mostly due to two likeable actors who were cast (Peter Kay and Sian Gibson) and who know how to create atmosphere. Gibson is cheerful and bubbly, Kay is more reserved, but together they somehow create chemistry where there is no chemistry.
The idea for the show is not that original (French Caméra Café that was remade in many countries was based on quite a similar formula, Peter Kay’s previous shows Phoenix Nights and Max and Paddy’s Road to Nowhere have similar elements), the scripts are not always up to par, but overall Car Share is a very entertaining show, despite all the seeming shortcomings.
