Laurence Didcott, a bit overzealous young French teacher, joins the staff of Mansion School, a private school with long history. His idealistic views on teaching will clash with the school policy.
Laurence Didcott is full of energy, full of ideas, full of naive enthusiasm when he crosses the gates of Mansion School, a private school with 235 years of tradition. But his boy-scout nature will be put to a test, when rest of the teachers will do anything to kill his idealistic and overzealous approach to teaching, the students, not to mention the parents. Nevertheless he tries his best to get to his pupils and teach them some French.
Short living sitcom starring Nigel Planer as new teacher, who doesn’t seem to realize that his passion for teaching is not shared by the rest of the staff. Unfortunately apart from few fairly good scenes Bonjour la Classe was very forgettable series - cast was good, the atmosphere was not bad, but oveall the whole project lacked the centerpoint of the whole series. Yes, Didcott was main character, but wasn’t a leading character - his clumsy and naive nature was good start, but lead to only few good moments. Yes, there were different plots, but there wasn’t anything that could be called main plot - Didcott’s problems with the pupils were often pushed aside by the subplots involving headmaster or other teachers. Yes, there were scenes showing Didcott as a teacher in class, but usually they were just short introductions to other plots and themes.
Bonjour la Classe is far from being worst sitcom ever, but the project seemed too supercifial and underdeveloped to succeed.
