Northern Exposure

1990s tv comedy series

A newly graduated doctor is offered a highly paid contract to set up his practice in Cicely. Soon he finds out that it’s Cicely, Alaska. After arrival he learns something else - it is not an ordinary town.

Northern Exposure is very unique series which is partly comedy, partly drama, partly philosophical journey for the New Yorker Joel Fleischman who is thrown into really eccentric citizens of Cicely. His lack of enthusiasm and cinical manners created a lot of comical situations, but even without it the people from Cicely are such strong characters that it was a great fun watching them.

After four seasons the situation become a little bit stale since Fleischman got used to the environment (and viewers too), so the creators tried to bring another doctor to Cicely who could replace him as a man-out-of-place character, but it didn’t really work - I mean it’s hard to be surprised twice by the same thing.

Overall - it’s great series full of interesting characters and situations. It hardly can compete with sitcoms, but it’s slow pace, friendly environment and relaxing atmosphere built this series an army of dedicated fans.
