First human colony is established on planet XB1174, but the crew is gonna face the problems they did not expected to face.
While commander of the mission died during the travel from Earth, Brian Palmer, second-in-command, takes the charge and soon learns that his job is not gonna be easy. He has to deal with two scientists, out of which one wants to get rid of him, while the other does not know the meaning of the word "ethics". To make things worse their food supplies are almost depleted and some of the crew members are not as professional as he might expected them to be.
My First Planet is interesting mixture of comedy and slight elements of science fiction, although the stories and humour is usually built on characters and their interactions, rather than the colony or planet itself. The scripts themselves were maybe not that great, but the show had its atmosphere and style, the episodes were entertaining, very good cast that included Nicholas Lyndhurst, Vicki Pepperdine, Tom Goodman-Hill and Cariad Lloyd did what was possible with the material.
The only weak point of the concept was that the stories were usually based on elements from our reality and our times, like social media, reality shows, tabloid newspapers, and did not used more elements specific to the reality of being in space, but this is matter of opinion and taster, rather than actual flaw in My First Planet. Overall a very entertaining show that might have improved with time, but was cut short after 2 seasons.
